1. Emergencies

For any health-related emergency, please dial 999 for an
ambulance. Calls to this number are always free.

2. Mental Health Support

If you need immediate help with your mental health:

  • NHS Urgent Mental Health Triage: Call 111 and select
    the “mental health” option.
  • Samaritans: Call 116 123 for 24/7 support.
  • Text Support: Text HANTS to 85258 for
    24/7 crisis support via text.
  • The Lighthouse Support: Text LIGHTHOUSE and your
    postcode to 07451 276010 between 4:30 PM – 12 AM for
    urgent assistance.

For non-urgent mental health support:

  • Steps to Wellbeing Service: OfIf you’re 18+ and
    experiencing low mood, depression, anxiety, or stress, the Southampton

3. New to Southampton?

If you are new to Southampton, it’s important to register with the nearest
GP (doctor) and dentist. You can find your nearest GP by searching “GP near
me” online. Follow the instructions on their website or visit the GP to fill
out a registration form.

4. Pregnant Women and Children

5. Screening Information

A. Screening During Pregnancy:
  • Hepatitis B, HIV, and syphilis
  • Down’s syndrome, Patau’s syndrome, and Edwards’ syndrome
  • Sickle cell and thalassaemia
  • 20-week baby development scan
  • Diabetic eye screening (for pregnant women with diabetes)
B. Screening for Newborn Babies:
  • Physical exam (eyes, heart, hips, testicles)
  • Hearing screening
  • Blood spot test for 9 rare conditions
C. NHS Health Check (ages 40+):

The NHS offers free health check-ups for adults aged 40-74 to assess risks
for heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and kidney disease. Those over 65 are
also screened for dementia symptoms.

D. How to get an NHS Health Check:

If eligible, you’ll be invited every 5 years by your GP or local council. If
not invited, contact your GP or local council. Some pharmacies also provide
this service.

E. Diabetic Eye Screening:

Starting at age 12, all people with diabetes are offered regular screening
to check for diabetic retinopathy.

F. Cervical Screening:

Women and people with a cervix aged 25-64 are invited for cervical screening
every 3 years (ages 25-49) or every 5 years (ages 50-64).

G. Breast Screening:

Women aged 50-70 are invited for breast cancer screening every 3 years.
Women over 70 can self-refer.

H. Bowel Cancer Screening:

Adults aged 50-74 are offered a home test kit every 2 years. Those over 75
can request a kit by calling 0800 707 6060.

I. Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening:

Men are invited for AAA screening when they turn 65. Men over 65 can
self-refer.

6. Social Services & Charities

Southampton City Council manages adult social care and children’s services.
